Inaugural Information

January 18, 2009

On Tuesday we will swear in our 44th President. It is an exciting and historical event. At DEMA we will be watching the tv with excitement as President Barack Obama takes his oath of office. Our Assistant Principal, Tonya Douglass is in D.C. for this momentous event. She has a blog at the Ledger Enquirer website. Check it out. On the front page click on blogs and look for the "educators perspective." We are excited to hear her updates.

A bit of artistic inaugural trivia for you:

  • Did you know that President Obama is the first president to have his official portrait taken with a digial camera?

2009 Painting: ‘View of the Yosemite Valley’

The backdrop for the luncheon will be this painting, chosen for occasion, and borrowed from the New York Historical Society.  The painting, "View of the Yosemite Valley," by Thomas Hill, reflects the majestic landscape of the American West and the dawn of a new era.  The subject of the painting, Yosemite Valley, represents an important but often overlooked event from Lincoln's presidency—his signing of the 1864 Yosemite Grant, which set aside Yosemite Valley and...

Hope

December 16, 2008

Congratulations to our student representative, Sydnie Perry, who's artwork of "Hope" helped the Columbus Literacy Alliance raise $2,300 for programs that will go toward increasing community literacy. Among local prominent members of our community who created works of art, also up for auction were canvases from Vanna White, Rachael Ray, members of the Braves, Cottonmouths, and many others. Sydnie was one of 40 student artists chosen to represent the Columbus community. The Favorite Word Gala was held at the Columbus State Corn Center for the Visual Artists. We had a wonderful time and Sydnie's work was purchased by a very lucky buyer! Thanks go out to the Literacy Alliance for allowing us the opportunity to advocate for the arts in schools and many thanks to Sydnie who did a terrific job painting her favorite word.

Artroom Update

December 4, 2008

We are two weeks from our Winter break and things are busy, busy at DEMA. Kindergarten, First grade and Second grade have all been working on positive and negative shapes. Second grade is now begining a recycled weaving project which is looking really cool. Third grade is finishing up a large painting that involved mixing colors and learning about color families. Fourth graders are currently exploring value. They are mixing values of a chosen color and painting in a design that will eventually fold into a cube. They are finding that many colors can come from just mixing one color plus white or black. Fifth graders are beginning a beading project that we will discuss more about later and a high contrast painting that is focused on color values.

Thanks so much for all of the support during our Square 1 Fundraiser. We made enough money to purchase clay for the art department (which was our goal). We appreciate all that our DEMA family does to support these creative geniuses!

The vote is in!

November 6, 2008

Congrats to our president elect, Senator Barach Obama. It was great to see so mutch enthusiasm for this years election, and to see so many people get out there and let their voices be heard.

The votes are in on another election as well. First graders have voted their favorite color. Check out what we did... My Favorite Color Looks Like… November 4th is almost here and it is inspiring First grade. We decided to hold our own election. Since we have been learning about colors and discovering how they work with each other and mix with each other, we thought a color vote would be appropriate. Many of our classroom discussions have led to declarations and descriptions of our most favorite colors. Because we are the art room, we felt that our election poll should be illustrative in manner. Each first grader cast their vote for their favorite color by printing their thumbprint in said hue (which we learned is another name for color) and then we turned our prints into mini characters. It was very interesting to see what colors were the most popular in each class. We graphed individual class results, as well as our... [More]
